Scaling up an environmentally friendly conifer seedling protection agent against damage caused by dendrophagous insects

Information prepared: 01.08.2024

SIA Jifteco, in cooperation with the Forest Industry Competence Centre, within the research direction “Increasing forest capital value and forestry” of the agreement No. 5.1.1.2.i.0/1/22/A/CFLA/007 signed with CFLA, is implementing the research project P27 “Scaling up an environmentally friendly conifer seedling protection agent against damage caused by dendrophagous insects”.

The aim of the project is to test, under industrial conditions, an innovative and environmentally friendly conifer seedling protection agent (hereinafter – the Repellent) that has already proven effective in laboratory conditions against damage caused by dendrophagous insects. The cooperation team of Jifteco and LVMI Silava has developed and tested the Repellent at the laboratory level (TRL4).

During project implementation, the plan is to produce this new 100% natural conifer seedling Repellent at pilot scale under industrial conditions, apply it under real-world conditions (TRL7), and study its effectiveness. The project will involve testing and scaling this new 100% natural, environmentally friendly Repellent for conifer seedlings, adapting its application using industrial repellent application equipment, and evaluating the impact and usefulness of the results within the forestry cycle.

Achieving the project results relies on planned interdisciplinary cooperation, involving specialists from chemistry, forestry, wood processing, forestry machinery, and engineering. Through this collaborative effort, the Repellent will be advanced to at least TRL7.

The project is planned for 12 months (01.08.2024–31.07.2025) and will consist of the core activities: production formulation, pilot-scale production, industrial application, durability testing, and technology formulation.

The total planned budget is EUR 129,800, including EUR 90,320.00 of co-financing from the European Union Recovery Fund.
